The governing board of the TOL Leadership Council (TLC) declared Prof. Suleiman Ahmed Gulaid as the winner of the inaugural Hassan Sh. Mumin Superior Excellence Award.
The award is named after the Somali literary giant, Mr. Hassan Sh. Mumin, the most accomplished among the TOL through the ages in the area of Somali literary tradition, whose standing among other Somalis is unsurpassed. He was a high achiever and an undisputed leader in his field. A renowned poet and playwright, he composed the first play that was translated into English and placed in international libraries. By the time he died in 2008, he composed hundreds of songs and plays.
The award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated superior excellence in their field; whose superior performance has been sustained over a prolonged period of time; and whose resulting influence is transformational and enduring in nature.
Prof. Suleiman Ahmed Gulaid spent a lifetime as an educator, standing out as a giant among his peers. His pioneering work at Amoud University is the most consequential project in post-civil war Somali education. Under his leadership, Amoud University has become a flagship institution other Somali regions emulate as the gold standard; from only 6 students 15 years ago to now close to 4000 students from all Somali regions, and even from the Diaspora, it is now the first Somali university to add graduate studies to its degree programs.
The TLC Governing Board salutes Prof. Suleiman Ahmed Gulaid for his superior excellence in his field as an educator and for his enduring impact on post-civil war Somali education.
